Big Brothers, Sisters look for more seniors

2007-08-09 / Local News

Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for more seniors to volunteer their time with a child once a month as part of the organization's Joining Paths Program.

It was started last year with funding from the New Horizons for Seniors program through the federal government.

It was continued this year as Executive Director Nancy Stallmach thinks it is a valuable experience for both the seniors and children who participate.

The program is for children who are on the waiting list for either a big brother or a big sister.

"Sometimes our children wait a long time before they get a big brother or big sister and we think it's really good to keep them involved with the agency and it allows us to get to know them as well," she said.

Activities they have done so far including going swimming, bowling and to the tai chi centre.

"It's like an intergenerational time between seniors and kids," said Ms. Stallmach. "The seniors love to spend time with the kids and the kids with the seniors because not every kid as a grandparent nearby that they can spend time with."

If you're a senior who would like to be involved with the program, call 519- 941-6431.
