Peewee Northmen take Ontario silver
The Boston Pizza Peewee #1 Northmen lacrosse team ended their 2007 season by bringing home silver from the Ontario "A" provincials.
A regular season record of 17 wins, six losses and one tie, easily placed the young Northmen in the "A" division for the provincials with the top 14 teams in the province.
In the two tournaments Orangeville entered, they came second in Brampton and won their hometown Barry Burman Tourney.
Two weekends were spent in Whitby in July as the 14 "A" teams played a roundrobin series to narrow the field down to the final six teams.
The Northmen started very strong the first weekend, beating Nepean, Akwesasne, London, Kitchener, Guelph and Peterborough while only losing to Clarington.
Asix win, 1 loss record put the Northmen in a good position to clinch a final spot the second weekend. With wins over West Durham, Mimico and Burlington and losses to Oakville, Halton and Whitby, Orangeville gathered 18 points and a tie for third place.
The provincials were held in Guelph this year and consisted of a full round-robin with only the top three teams advancing on to Sunday.
In a lacklustre Friday morning game where both teams seemed to have the provincial jitters, the Northmen lost a close one to Halton.
Their second game saw Orangeville come out strong against Whitby taking a 7-3 lead late into the second. Undaunted, Whitby clawed back and stole the win, posting a 8-7victory.
Needing to get back on track and grab a "W," the Northmen played a good final game Friday topping Oakville 7-5.
Saturday morning Orangeville got off to another good start, jumping ahead of West Durham 4-0. But as had been happening too much lately, the boys couldn't hold the lead but were able to grab a much needed point in a 4-4 tie.
The final game on Saturday was a must win one for Orangeville as they faced Peterborough.
Once again the Northmen played strong for the first two periods, charging out to a large lead. Peterborough fought back a bit but Orangeville hung onto the lead.
This win created a two way tie for the final spot with Orangeville and Oakville but with the Northmens' win over the Hawks in the roundrobin it set up a rematch of the Peterborough/ Orangeville game to be played Sunday morning with the winner playing Halton Hills for the gold.
In one of their best games of the season, Orangeville came ready to play and handled Peterborough fairly easy in a 9-6 win with Peterborough grabbing a couple last minute goals.
This setup a game between two zone 10 rivals who had already seen each other six times this year.
The Halton team had a great year up to that point with only a couple losses on their record.
Orangeville felt confident that they could take down the Bulldogs. Unfortunately Halton had different ideas as they jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back.
The Northmen kept working hard right to the end of the game but came out on the short end of a 10-4 score.
Knowing they had done their best, the young Northmen held their heads up and proudly accepted their silver medal as the second best peewee lacrosse team in the province.
The players of the Peewee Northmen team include Nolan Ragogna, Connor Anyon, Steve Sutton, Malcolm Young, Jamie McMahon, Riley Thompson, Dallas Bridle, Tom Kent, Shane Hillis, Matt Austriaco, Pat Sullivan, Flick Fournier, Trevor Smyth, Joel Coyle, Nick Ritchie, Jeff Taylor and Ryan Myles. The coaching staff is Bob McMahon, John Kartalev, Kaarina Dillabough, Dave Hillis and Greg Thompson.
Special mention must go out to Nick Ritchie and Dallas Bridle who helped Ontario win gold in the peewee Nationals.
Nick also capped off a great year being named to the Ontario peewee "A" all-star team and being chosen as the overall peewee MVP, well deserved recognition of a great young lacrosse player.
