Residents slam crowded street parking near hospital
After years of enduring a vehicle-packed street with hospital staff and visitors occupying or blocking their driveways, residents of Joshua Road have had enough and want council to do something about their cramped situation.
"I have lived here for six years and am quite frustrated with the parking problem on our street," Mary English wrote in a letter to her neighbours seeking support. "I resent the many hospital visitors that park in front of our houses restricting the flow of traffic, not to mention the inconvenience it is for our family and friends to find a parking spot when they visit us."
She told council residents of the street are continually inconvenienced by hospital staff and visitors who park on Joshua Road. Ms. English says some people park across driveways, using the excuse that they'll only be 10 minutes.
As well, with all the access traffic, it's a question of safety for motorists and pedestrians, especially in the winter.
She said that if she is expecting company she has to park her vehicle on the street to secure a parking space. There have even been times her guests have had to pay to park in the hospital parking lot since some of those who are supposed to be parking there don't.
Mr. English doesn't want her street to be an option for hospital staff and visitors. She would like to see something like parking passes issued to residents of the street for their guests - something she said Mississauga does.
Another resident of the street presented council with a police report showing the number of times she has called the police because there was a car blocking her driveway or parking in it.
Neither the mayor nor councillors had any comments for the concerned residents.
Instead, the issue was referred to the Public Works Department, which is to prepare a report for council.
