Anthony Kilburne show some of the DVDs seized at the Shelburne Giant Tiger store in the course of arresting a mother and daughter on charges of theft and possession of stolen property. A mother and daughter face theft charges in connection with what Shelburne Police say was a massive shoplifting operation that took place over a nearly 10- month period.

Police called to the local Giant Tiger store were informed that two women had been apprehended after being witnessed trying to conceal items they had taken off the shelves.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the mother and daughter would carry a large bag into the store which they would use to conceal DVD movies and video games.

Police say the two would take up to 25 movies and games, sometimes as often as twice a week. They would then go to second hand stores where they would sell the pilfered merchandise. It is believed the thefts have been occurring since January.

During the investigation officers were able to recover hundreds of movies and games, but it is believed more than 1,000 are still missing. The total amount taken by the pair was worth almost $10,000.

Police said that while both accused have been charged with theft and possession of stolen property, they cannot be identified as the daughter is an alleged young offender.

They say other arrests in this matter are expected.

Locks to be shorn

In unrelated police news, Shelburne officers will be feeling the cold a little more this fall.

Members of the service will be participating in the Cops for Cancer program. Officers, in an effort to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, will shed their locks for this worthy cause.

Each participating member will have a pledge form so, if you are interested in sponsoring an officer, please attended the Shelburne Police Station.

Remember, if you have any information about a crime please call the Shelburne Police Service at (519) 925-3312 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS(8477).
