The Town of Mono has invited area residents "to stride, stroll or saunter your way into the World Record Walk on October 3 at 12:30 p.m. Count yourself in on helping Canada to beat Australia's record of 100,915 people walking one km at the same time."

And in addition, there will be a unique opportunity - to take a walk on a brand new trail.

The World Record Walk is being organized by Green Communities Canada with support from the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion.

The walk and the trail launch SPORTS will start at 12:20 p.m. at the trailhead, located on Hockley Road across from Mono Amaranth Public School, where everyone will be invited to walk a 1 km route.

The new 920-metre, fully accessible hiking and cycling trail was built by Mono in partnership with Credit Valley Conservation, the County of Dufferin, the Nottawasaga Conservation Authority and with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The trail ends at the north shore dam in the Island Lake Conservation Area.

To mark this celebration, local In Motion co-ordinator Kim Perryman has unveiled a unique walking stick campaign that's being piloted in Mono. Students who participate in the walk are eligible to receive beautiful walking sticks assembled by clients of Community Living Dufferin, who will also be participating in the walk. Students can earn a colourful decal for their walking stick by hiking a series of local trails.
