Back to back wins for Orangeville Crushers
The Orangeville Crushers have made their way into the win column for the first time this season with a pair of back to back wins this weekend.
On Friday night the Collingwood Blues playing host to Orangeville.
Both teams came into this game looking for their first season victory. Matt Kinsella got the nod to start in goal against his former Blues team mates and he was more than up to the challenge stopping 29 of 30 shots he faced on the evening.
Robert Visca would draw first blood for the Crushers with a powerplay goal assisted by Nicholas Vassos and Kurt zdilich with 50 seconds remaining in the first period.
Collingwood would draw even with a powerplay marker of their own, early in the second before Sean Poitras notched what would be the game winner at 12:51 of the mid-frame.
Both teams would continue to press through for the balance of the game but, strong defense combined with solid goaltending at both ends shut down both offensive units and gave Orangeville their first win of the season with a 2-1 final score.
Action continued for the Crushers early Saturday morning where they hooked up with Buffalo as part of the Governors Showcase tournament in Mississauga.
Again it was Orangeville getting out to an early lead with Matt McCann notching a powerplay marker just past the midway point of period one.
Steady pressure throughout the game was rewarded early in the third with a pair of quick singles by David Harris and Visca.
Buffalo would get one back against newly acquired goaltender Neil Clelland only to have Nicholas Hewko cancel that out with an unassisted Orangeville powerplay goal at the 12:30 mark, making it 4-1 for the Crushers where it would remain till the final buzzer.
For the coaching staff, the wins are a good sign that the players are starting to do what has been asked of them.
In a sentiment shared by coach Dale Hawerchuk, assistant coach Jean Guy Poitras was pleased by the effort put forth in both games.
"It was a very good way for the boys to get their confidence back," he said. "They played two hard working games and after a slow start, its good to go on a bit of a streak."
Poitras notes they are starting to come together as a team and that with each game, there is improvement. He acknowledges one area that still needs work is on special teams.
"The guys are playing more disciplined hockey and that is creating chances for us on the powerplay, chances we need to learn to finish - something that Dale is working on with them," he said.
The upcoming weekend will give the Crushers another pair of opportunities to continue their winning streak.
Friday night its back to Huntsville for a rematch with the Otters. Despite losing their two previous games this year, Hawerchuk notes that both games were close and if the team can execute what they have learned over the last two weeks, they have a good chance of getting past Huntsville on the scoreboard.
Saturday, it's back home to more familiar confines when the team hooks up again for a 7:30 p.m. start at the Alder Street Arena with Collingwood.
