New street racing law in effect
Although early reports indicate 44 drivers provincewide have been charged with the new law that addresses street racing, no driver in Dufferin, according to its police services, have been charged under the new regulation that went into effect midnight, last Saturday.
Section 172 and Regulation 455/07 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) is amended to impose stiffer penalties for those who engage in street racing, driving contests and driving stunts.
The definition of a "stunt" now reads, "driving at 50 km/hour or more above the posted speed limit."
A police officer who suspects an offence under section 172 HTA has been committed can: suspend a driver's licence for seven days and immediately impound the vehicle at the owners' expense for seven days.
Upon conviction in court, the driver could face a fine of $2,000 up to $10,000, with possible further court ordered licence suspension.
