ESR begins for 4 small local wind farms
Roger Short, whose original groundwork and wind studies led to Canadian Hydro Developers' industrial scale projects in Melancthon and Amaranth, has commenced Environmental Screening for four 9 MW projects locally.
Two of those are in Melancthon, north of Shelburne, and two are in Grey Highlands, north and west of there.
Mr. Short and his Chinodin Wind Power had negotiated a number of leases for turbines before selling his interests in what originally was called "Melancthon- Grey" wind farm to Canadian Hydro Developers Inc.
What later became the 200-MW, 132-turbine development known as Melancthon I and Melancthon II embraced most, but not all, of the leases negotiated by Mr. Short.
"I didn't want to see any of those (left out of the picture)," he said in an interview earlier this week.
The four farms proposed by Mr. Short now are each of six 1.5-MW turbines, under the provincial Standard Offer Program.
He said he has been approved for the program, and for connection to the local power grid.
However, the projects are subject to the provincial ESR, the federal Environmental Impact Statement, and municipal zoning approval.
"The EA will assess the potential impact of the proposed wind generation facility on the bio-physical and socio-economic environment during the construction, operation and decommissioning.
"CWP will analyze the potential for environmental effects of the projects and will respond to issues raised by stakeholders and the general pubic.
"Public consultation will be an integral component of this study. Public and regulatory consultation will be conducted on an ongoing basis to provide input on various components of the study," Chinodin says in a public notice.
Chinodin Wind Power is based in Dundalk.
