The Orangeville Atom B Tigers finished the Willowdale Red Wings girl's hockey tournament with a second place triumph last weekend.

The girls, sponsored by Sanderson Sports, made it to the finals on Sunday afternoon only to be edged 4-2 by a determined Leaside Wildcats team.

Despite making it close in the third period by scoring two quick goals, the Tigers comeback fell short as Leaside scored again with less than two minutes to play.

Coach Rob Traves was very pleased with their preseason effort saying, "our girls passed the puck well and played good positionally. We will have a strong season as we improve week after week".

The Tigers started off strong on Friday morning with a 4-0 win over Durham West Lighting.

Brittany Shand, the Tiger's rookie goalie was superb in turning away all shots in her 1st game as a Tiger.

Alyssa Kozluk opened the scoring for the Tigers early in the first with assists going to Jayde Lavoie and Claire Renouf.

Less than three minutes later, Kirsten Traves got the puck back to Tiger defenseman Renouf who's hard shot found its way into the back of the Durham net.

Before the period was over the Tigers went ahead 3-0 when Maggie Scaife slid the puck to Lindsey Smith who eluded the Durham players and netted her first of the game with a backhand to the top corner.

The second period was a see-saw battle with Orangeville surviving a twoman disadvantage with strong defensive play anchored by Shand.

In the third period, Smith notched her second of the game from Courteney Lewis and Erica Greshuk and the Tigers, with heads-up defensive plays by Taylor Murray, cruised through with the victory.

The Tigers continued their winning ways on Friday afternoon with Shand posting a second straight shut-out in a 2-0 victory over the Aurora Panthers.

Shand stopped Aurora on a breakaway early in the game and before the first period was over Samantha Sterritt fed Smith who weaved her way through the Aurora zone and netted her third of the tournament.

Nearing the end of the second period, Orangeville gained some breathing room when Scaife held the puck in at the Aurora blueline knocking it to Lewis who wheeled a pass to Lavoie in the slot who chipped it into the top of the Aurora net .

During the third, Orangeville continued to thwart Aurora's chances and Shand was superb on several occasions .

Coach Traves was very pleased with the two opening shut-outs stating that, "our goaltending from a rookie player at the BB level was most impressive".

In the semi-final game, the Mississauga Chiefs scored early in the first to end Shand's shut-out run and added another before the period was over.

Early in the second, some confusion in the Mississauga zone allowed Julia Mutton to capitalize on the forechecking of her line-mates Smith and Sterritt and before the period was over Greshuk tied the game for Orangeville taking advantage of a loose puck with helpers going to J. Mutton and Sterritt.

Aurora took the lead again early in the third, but the forechecking of Lewis and Greshuk allowed Kozluk to bang home the tying goal with less than five minutes to play. With two minutes to go, a well-executed break-out started by Kayley Mutton allowed Sterritt to feed Traves breaking through the Aurora defence and fooled the goalie for the winner.

Shand would be called on again before the game was over but Orangeville held solid for the 4-3 victory.
