About 250 students placed entries in the 2007 edition of Orangeville Royal Canadian Legion's Remembrance Day poster and poetry contest, Youth Education Chairman Cathy Connelly told a general meeting of the branch Monday night.

Of the entries, the firstplace winners in each category (based on school level) will go on to compete at the Zone event in Alliston, thence to Provincial and Dominion competitions if successful.

Advancing to the Zone are the following: Black and White Poster: junior, Luke Wunder; intermediate, Robert Sweers; and primary, Emily Vultdo.

In colour poster: junior, Alexis Burges; intermediate, Pamela Garcia; and primary, Erica Menzes.

In the poetry contest, Melissa Mouck won in intermediate, and Elise Hoebke in junior.

Second- and third-place winners in each category were Erik Reimers and Graham Jensen in junior black and white; Emma Dinatale and Alysis Horvath in intermediate B & W; and Adrianna Fedrreira and Serena Parkes in primary.

In colour, it was Melissa Basin and Samantha Martin in primary, Liam McNair and Jordan Brown in intermediate, and Stephen Dylan Thomas and Felicia de Sousa in primary. Kirsten van den Barge and Jordynn Endeman were second and third in junior poetry.

Ms. Connelly told the meeting that there had been no entries from the Upper Grand elementary schools; all had been from the separate and private school systems.

At the Upper Grand Board, June Pollard in Superintendent Rosemary Fife's office said there must have been a lack of communications, as the Remembrance Day project had always been supported in the board's Dufferin schools.
