Giant of a musical at Theatre Orangeville
There will be a message for the patrons of Theatre Orangeville tonight (Nov. 29) through Dec. 23: in the Giant's Garden, you reap what you sow.
The Giant's Garden is based on The Selfish Giant, a short story by Oscar Wilde in which a territorial giant is forced to live in prolonged winter until he learns to share his garden with others.
While the story reads much like a sermon, Giant's Garden director David Nairn insists this production "is not a morality play.
"It's based on the story 'The Selfish Giant,' which is a morality play, but Scott White and Peter Fenton, who wrote a composed the piece, just used that story as a jump-off point," he said.
"It's a story about friends, and giving of ourselves, but not in a strict morality sense."
Without giving away the story, the play is basically about two children (Elisabeth Dubois and James Gerus) who infiltrate the fortified garden of the giant (Michael MacLennon) and, in the words of Mr. Nairn, "transform this magical world."
Ticket sales have been brisk, so far. In fact, 12 children's matinees are already sold out.
"These shows we do at Christmas have become a real holiday tradition," Mr. Nairn said.
