'Blind faith' based on 'fact'
I also have read Rev. Scott's Faith and Science article in the Citizen and I found it to be, generally speaking, a good writing. Where Eric Nagler goes wrong in his assessment is that he puts the two, faith and science, over against each other. There is however, n conflict between true science and the belief in God.
The God who created the world is the same God who gave us the laws of nature. Evolution presented as science is a materialistic belief and it claims that the world came into existence spontaneously billions of years ago and that in contradiction to the Genesis account.
That Jesus is risen from the dead, for example, is a fact witnessed by his disciples and others. These accounts are written in the Bible and testify that Christ is risen and we believe their testimony.
Thus our faith is not a "blind" faith, but is based on historical fact. Because God created the world and gave the 10 Commandments, we are accountable to Him. So, also, the persons responsible for the Spanish Inquisition who with a show of righteousness killed Protestants, Jews and Moslems alike, will be held accountable.
But to whom in their own minds are atheists and agnostics accountable to? They believe in the writings of Darwin's book, "Origins of Species."
Karl Marx and his followers took Darwin's theories as their creed. The atrocities of Joseph Stalin and Adolph Hitler reveal in start detail how despotic and cruel the impersonal world view of naturalism really is when pursued to it's ultimate consequences.
He scientific racism of the Nazis killed 40 million people and it attempted the genocide of the Jewish people.
The scientific socialism of communist countries killed 100 million and are still counting!
From Stalin it is said killing millions of people was no difference than mowing the lawn.
The Spanish Inquisition probably killed 3000 people over three centuries.
The Soviet Union killed that on an average day. Indeed horrible examples!
And then we have that question of Eric Nagler about Intelligent design in connection with faith.
As for me, I like it because it destroys the idea that there is no rhyme or reason how this world came into being, or how it has developed into the present day world over billions of years, and it supports the idea that there really must be a Designer of this world.
However, it falls short in its recognition of a Creator God and does not solve the sin question of this world.
For that we need to believe in Jesus Christ who took away the sins of the world (John 1:29).
