ROYAL SNIPER Jonathan Chenier drives down the sideline in District 4 basketball action. Photo/MIKE MALONEY Action is now well underway in both District 4 and 10 Boys high school basketball.
On Monday afternoon, both Westside and CDDHS Senior squads kicked off their 2007 campaigns with wins.
On the road in Palmerston, Westside rolled to a 68-28 win over the Redman lead by a 25 point effort from Brent Barwick.
In the junior pairing between the two schools a 16 point showing from Adam Craig combined with Josh Hodge chipping in 14 lead the Thunder to a 60-38 decision over Norwell.
Across in Shelburne it was the Royals playing host to College Heights in their home opener.
Getting off to an quick start, CDDHS wasted no time in taking control of the game early, jumping out to a 26-8 lead going into the half.
Jonathan Chenier set the pace for Shelburne on offence shooting for a total of 16 while the efforts of Tyler Linger under the hoop earned him 11 followed by Sam Smith with 8 points.
In what is obviously a rebuilding year for the Royals, coach Patrick Kings is guardedly optimistic on his teams chances this year. "Sure we have a lot of new faces" says Kings," but we also have a lot of building blocks to use - guys that like to play, work hard and are willing to learn."
After loosing five of their starters from last season, Kings knows that he will be counting heavily on his returning players to step up and will be counting on a big season from guys like Smith, Dean Costanzo and Richard Bradberry if they are going to experience some of the success they have in recent years.
In District 10 play Tuesday afternoon, it was ODSS getting things off to a mixed start.
Playing in Guelph at Our Lady of Lourdes, the Junior Bears found themselves on the wrong side of a 50-28 score. Travis Szabolcs would prove to be the Bears silver lining in this one dropping a total of 12 points.
The senior match-up proved to be a much closer contest. Veteran Cory Shody would lead his team mates, shooting for 18 to help edge Lourdes 56 -44 at the final buzzer.
