Tigers take pair from Brampton
The Sanderson Sports Orangeville Tigers Atom B girl's hockey team took both games from the Brampton Canadettes in a home-and-home series this past weekend.
Friday's tilt in Orangeville was the first meeting between these two clubs this season.
The Tigers set the tone early with Samantha Sterritt converting a pass from Julia Mutton and Kirsten Traves at 0:59 seconds.
Soon after, Brampton took a tripping penalty and Traves notched a power play marker from the defensive pairing of Claire Renouf and Kayley Mutton.
Then Sterritt and J. Mutton assisted on Lindsey Smith's first of the game while the Tiger's stingy defence didn't allow a first period shot on Tiger's goalie Brittany Shand. Orangeville went up 4-in the second on a bullet from the point by Renouf after being fed by Courtney Lewis.
In the third period, Smith scored twice to complete her hat-trick with assists going to defensemen Taylor Murray and Renouf on one and wingers Sterritt and K. Mutton for the other.
The Tigers convincing 6-0 victory was perhaps their best team effort of the season.
Sunday in Brampton
•Continued from B1
was a different story with the Tigers coming out flat and hanging on to a 2-2 tie at the end of the first on goals from wingers J. Mutton and Jayde Lavoie with both helpers going to Smith.
Early in the second, the Tiger's found themselves in penalty trouble. With Smith sent off for interference , Brampton capitalized to take the lead 3-2.
Mutton then earned herself two for tripping but the Tigers penalty killers held fast, denying Brampton any shots on Shand.
With three minutes left in the second period, Smith netted the equalizer on a long pass from Maggie Scaife.
Third period would prove to be a nail-biter, with both sides trading chances.
Orangeville finally took the lead on a great effort from Erica Greshuk who after taking a pass from Renouf, and while lying on the ice in front of the Brampton net, swiped the puck over to a wide open Smith for the 4-3 lead.
Both teams took penalties in the final three minutes and even with Brampton pulling their goalie for the extra attacker, the Tigers hung on for the victory.
Coach Rob Traves summed up the two "quite different games" this way, "We definitely finished on our opportunities Friday, but not so much Sunday. We struggled as a team defensively as well. I would give Brampton credit for hard work. Their passing was better and I know they were pumped to play us after they tied Aurora on Saturday."
