Weather fails to slow speed demon
The nasty start of winter continues to wreak havoc on Dufferin roads as closures continue on several area routes. Yet, the hazardous conditions failed to slow one alleged speed demon over the weekend on Airport Road.
On a Saturday night marked with rain and freezing rain in the region, Dufferin OPP stopped a southbound Dodge pickup traveling at a reported 168 km/h in the 80 km/h zone.
The vehicle's operator received an automatic seven-day licence suspension and the pickup was impounded for seven days.
Charged with racing (excessive speed), James M. Vanstralen, 32, of Palgrave is to appear Jan. 16 in Orangeville Traffic Court.
"Some people are just not getting the message," says Cst. Al Buck of the Dufferin OPP. "We have laid many charges for racing."
Drivers are reminded to exercise caution, even if the weather is not stormy. On Monday, a slight snowfall, combined with high winds, caused an allday closure of County Road 124 (formerly Highway 24) from Shelburne to Singhampton. Areas of the road experienced complete whiteouts.
County Road 109 (formerly Highway 9) between County Road 25 and Arthur was closed Monday, due to the same conditions.
In other police news, officers from Dufferin OPP and the Central Region Rural Agricultural Crime Team executed a search warrant Nov. 26 at a farm property in Mulmur Township.
They seized a 2006 Bombardier 4-wheel ATV, a 2004 Polaris 4-wheel ATV, and a .22 calibre rifle. Both ATVs are allegedly stolen from Wellington County.
Derek Van Dyke, 44, of Mulmur Township has been charged with two counts of possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime, and unsafe storage of a firearm.
He is scheduled to appear in Orangeville Criminal Court on Dec. 18.
