Tigers rally over Sharks
The Sanderson Sports Orangeville Tigers Atom B girl's hockey team extended their regular season streak to seven consecutive wins with a 4-1 victory over the Barrie Sharks at Alder Street Arena last Friday.
As the game unfolded, Tiger's netminder Brittany Shand was called on regularly to fend off several frenzied Shark attacks as the Tigers struggled to control the play.
It would be Barrie who would strike first on a goalmouth scramble at 0:21 of the second period to take a 1-0 lead on the frustrated Tigers.
Leading by example, Tigers team captain Lindsey Smith took a pass from defenseman Taylor Murray at centre ice and slipped through the Barrie defense and fired a shot over the sprawling Barrie netminder to tie the score before the end of the second.
This goal seemed to rejuvenate the Tigers who gained momentum, cranked up the intensity, and never looked back.
Early in the third, the Tigers struck for three goals in just over a minute to deflate the Sharks.
First, Courtney Lewis slid the puck to Smith and her rebound was slammed home by Alyssa Kozluk for the 2-1 lead and eventual game winner.
Less than 30 seconds later, defenseman Claire Renouf cleared the Tiger's zone to Kirsten Traves who deftly weaved her way through the Sharks defense for a 3-1 lead.
42 seconds later, Kayley Mutton held the Shark's zone and Traves found Erica Greshuk all alone at the side of the Barrie net who made no mistake in notching the Tiger's final tally.
For the remainder of the game the Tiger's played inspired smart positional hockey to shut the door on the Barrie offense and the Shark's netminder was kept very busy defending the Tiger's attacks.
After the game, Tiger's coach Rob Traves commented that the Barrie goaltender, "played really well" in keeping the Tiger's at bay and that his team "never gave up" in their come-from-behind 4- 1 victory.
