Novice Flyers take 3-2 OT victory

2008-01-24 / Sports

The Novice AA Flyers improved their play off record to 2-0 with an exciting overtime win over Caledon.

The Flyers knew coming in that Caledon always seems to bring their "A" game when they make the trip up Hwy 10.

Both teams skated to a 0- 0 first period with Orangeville controlling most of the play in Caledon's end.

Even though Caledon took three consecutive penalties, the Flyers couldn't muster up the offence to score.

The line of Ty Inglis, Evan Kiser and Matthew Wark were called to task tonight and played a strong forechecking game.

Second period action saw Orangeville collect some rewards for their efforts as Scott Del Zotto scored back to back goals with one on the power play to give Orangeville a 2-0 lead.

The third period saw a different Caledon team take the ice.

Caledon was forechecking hard and managed a pair of goals themselves to tie things at 2-2.

With time winding down it was Matty Jennings who kept the Flyers in the game as he made some key saves late in the game.

The efforts of both Kyle Waters and Michael McCannell contributed to keeping this game tied as both worked hard, clearing the puck out of the crease on two different occasions before a Caledon player could get to it.

As the buzzer sounded at the end of the third it was off to overtime.

Right off the start of the overtime Orangeville drew a penalty and Caledon went on the power play.

The Flyers managed to kill off the advantage and just as the penalty was over Ryan Boon picked up the puck and caught Caledon on a line change and burst up the ice.

Ryan went in on the break away and made them pay as he wired a shot top corner to win the game.

This gives the Flyers a 2-0 record as they prepare to travel south to Michigan to try and win the 2008 International Silver Stick Tournament.
