Long saga of Maodus trials finally over
      Except for completion of his two-year conditional sentence and a possible police board hearing, the long saga of trials may have ended for Ned Maodus, a former Mono resident and member of the once-elite Toronto police drug squad.

SALVAGE OPERATION:
     Contributed Photo SALVAGE OPERATION: Dufferin-Caledon Habitat for Humanity was busy recently with a salvage of five homes in Alliston. The salvage teams were able to salvage an estimated $400,000 worth of materials to be sold in Habitat's ReStore in Orangeville. In the photo, ReStore manager Robert Jones and development co-ordinator Deborah Seaton take a timeout from the salvaging operation.

Grannies, Tanglefoot help battle AIDS
      A small group of Dufferin-area women Saturday raised about $2,000 in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation by bringing world-renowned Tanglefoot to the Orangeville Opera House. The 15-member group - Go Go Grannies - is an offshoot of Orangeville Women's University Club.

WATER WHEELCHAIR:
     Photo/DAN PELTON WATER WHEELCHAIR: Orangeville's Accessibility Committee has purchased a water wheelchair and eight lifejackets to assist those with disabilities at Orangeville's pools. Displaying the water wheelchair that will be used at the Alder Street Recreation Centre pool and the lifejackets that will be split between the pools at the two recreation centres are members of the Accessibility Committee Larry Rankin, Charles Nockolds, Barb Ven Etten, Carrie Cunningham, Aquatic Supervisor Deb Halls and Leila Stewart. The water wheelchair cost approximately $1,800 and the lifejackets totalled $2,000. This is the second water wheelchair at the Alder pool, with the first one purchased by the Town in 2003.

Town runs healthy hearts program
      The Town of Orangeville is running "Get Fit for Heart Health" programs to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and awareness about healthy living. The event kicked off last week in the Alder Recreation Centre and will wrap up on February 27 between 8:30 and 9:20 a.m. at the Tony Rose Sports Centre, with prizes and awards.

THE FAMILY TREE:
     Photo/DAN PELTON THE FAMILY TREE: Orangeville residents now have an opportunity to add a baby tree to their families with the launch of the Baby Tree program by the Urban Forestry subcommittee of the Orangeville Sustainability Action Team. Donations can mark the arrival of a baby by making a donation. A tree will be planted in the baby's name. Donors will receive an income tax receipt (for donations of $10 or more), and a card will be sent to the babies indicating that donations were made on their behalf. Optimist Maple Syrup festival opens March 29
      The 2008 Orangeville Optimist Maple Syrup Festival will be held Saturday, March 29 and Sunday March 30 at the Island Lake Conservation Area. This event is the Optimist Club of Orangeville's "Rite of Spring" - the first taste of warmth for the year and a chance to get outdoors again for many people around Orangeville.

Son of Perrin Beatty dies in Thailand
      Christopher Beatty, the son of former Wellington- Dufferin-Simcoe MP Perrin Beatty, died after a weekend motorcycle accident on Feb. 1 in Thailand at age 23.
