D-P schools marking Black History Month

2008-02-07 / Local News

Dufferin-Peel Catholic schools have a long tradition of celebrating Black History Month with special events and activities held throughout February

Among the events planned this year is the fourth annual board-wide conference for secondary students, entitled Teach One, Be One: The Strength of Today.

The conference, which is organized by Cardinal Leger Secondary School, will include keynote speakers Kiki Ojo, Diversity Manager for Children's Aid Society of Peel and Carl James, professor of Sociology at York University.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in two of 10 workshops which will address the identities of a black individual in today's society. Teach One, Be One will take place on February 28 at the Sheridan College Davis Campus in Brampton.

A resource package compiled by the Communications and Community Relations Department, containing information about Canadian black history websites, books, museums and guest speakers, was also sent to all teachers to assist in classroom projects, lessons, etc. The resource package, as well as a calendar of Black History Month events across the board, is available on the board's website at www.dpcdsb.org.
