Planning council briefed on trusts
The Greater Dufferin Area Estate Planning Council (GDAEPC) recently enjoyed an instructive presentation on trusts by Bruce Ball, a partner in BDO Dunwoody LLP's National Office in Toronto.
Bruce informed the group that many trusts were set up in the late 1980's and are coming up to the 21-year anniversary date when there will be a deemed disposition. He elaborated on the income tax implications of this event, potential solutions and gave direction on setting up new trusts that can be more tax efficient.
GDAEPC members meet collegially on a regular basis with other estate planning professionals of all disciplines. The purpose is to allow the membership to openly share ideas and work experience with each other and hear noted experts in the various areas of estate planning speak on topics of interest.
The Council meets four times a year in March, May, September and December. The next meeting will be May 13.
