An 82-year-old Grand Valley man has been charged in Florida with leaving the scene of an accident following a fatal traffic mishap Monday, March 3 in Fort Ogden, Florida.

Durward Greenwood was arrested at his home in nearby Punta Gorda after 77-year-old Gerald Webb, a retired chiropractor from Exeter, Ontario, was killed when the golf cart he was driving was struck from behind.

Eyewitnesses said Dr. Webb was picking up his mail at the time.

According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, Mr. Greenwood told arresting officers that he thought he had struck a paver while driving home from a golf course, and got out of his car to check the damage.

He told officers that a work crew, which was paving the intersection, didn't seem concerned so he got in his car and left. He also agreed to take a blood test for alcohol, the results of which were not available as of Wednesday at press time.

Mr. Greenwood was released on the evening of March 3 after posting a $10,000 bond.

Fort Ogden is an inland community southeast of Tampa Bay.
