Novice Flyers edged out by Hawks
NOVICE AA FLYERS goalie Matthew Jennings was kept busy between the pipes of the Orangeville goal in Ontario Hockey Association semi-final action against the Caledon Hawks over this past weekend. Photo/MIKE MALONEY One of the closest playoff contests to hit the ice in Orangeville came to an unhappy ending for the Orangeville Novice AA Flyers this past weekend.
With the best of five series with the Caledon Hawks tied at two, Orangeville was unable to find the magic one more time; falling 4-3 to the Hawks on Sunday.
The series had been a seesaw ride right from the opening face-off with the two teams swapping goals, the lead and games. Game three back at the Tony Rose last Wednesday night was no different.
Having come back to tie the series at 1-1 just a few nights before, Orangeville put pressure on the Hawks right out of the gate.
The Hawks goalie was on his game as he kept the Flyers at bay.
Late in the first Ty Inglis slid one just wide of the net but he made good on a second chance minutes later, scoring after being set up by Ryan Boon.
A few minutes later, the Flyers would get their first of seven minor penalties and Caledon tied it 1-1.
Second period action saw Orangeville start to take control of the game.
Kyle Waters threw one at the net which handcuffed the Caledon goalie and went in to give Flyers the lead.
Shane Price put the Flyers up by two as he stuffed one to the top drawer on a setup from Ty Inglis and Dustyn Pratt.
Scott Del Zotto would add to the lead from linemate Antonio Traetto to make it 4-1.
Caledon would draw back to within one when penalty trouble allowed the Hawks to add a pair of power-play markers heading into the third
With the momentum obviously shifting, Caledon applied pressure and had the puck in the Flyers end for what seemed to be an eternity.
The hard working Flyers managed to stave off the Caledon attack including another penalty with 2:41 left in the game.
Pulling their goalie in favour of the extra attacker, Caledon looked poised to even things up but goalie Matthew Jennings made a late toe save that kept the puck out and Orangeville took the series lead with the 4-3 win.
Again the seesaw swayed the other way on Saturday night. Playing in Mayfield, Caledon pulled out a 3-2 overtime win to keep their playoff aspirations alive and force the winner take all game five on Sunday back at the Tony Rose.
With neither squad wanting to give the other an advantage, both teams played a cautious offence through the first period of game five.
Things quickly opened up in the second frame, however, when Caledon caught everyone off guard and tucked one past Jennings just 26 seconds into the second.
Waters managed to get that one back five minutes later with an end to end rush to tie things at 1-1.
Again penalties would prove costly for Orangeville as Caledon would record another power play goal to take back the lead.
Orangeville's Scott Del Zotto had an answer for that, zigzagging his way through the defence to put one past the Hawks goalie to tie the game once again.
With Orangeville on the power play it was Deaglan Small from Del Zotto to put the Flyers up 3-2.
As had been the story all series, Caledon refused to quit and tied the game at 3-3 near the end of the second.
With momentum on their side, Caledon would strike once again on the power play to score what would prove to be the winner.
Orangeville tried desperately to tie things up with some late chances but the Caledon goalie was not interested in going into overtime and the Hawks hung on to win the game 4-3 and advance to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association finals against Aurora .
