Novice C Tigers take gold
During the Easter weekend the Orangeville Novice C Tigers set off for Brampton with gold on their minds.
The Tigers started off by facing a very physical team from Windsor.
With the Wildcats taking the body and being penalized for it the Tigers prevailed 7-0.
Highlights of the game included Jessie Lewis playing her best game of the season according to coach Don Williamson.
Tatyana Feiner playing aggressive hockey and although she took her first penalty she was not backing down from the physical play of Windsor.
Victoria Klimek continued to find the back of the net and Shanna Hayward stopped every puck sent her way.
The defence of Lauren Albano, Madison Miller, Zoe Collis and Morgan Poirier did an awesome job of carrying the puck and standing up to the physical play of the Wildcats.
Game two saw the Tigers face off against the Leaside Wildcats at the Earnscliffe Recreation Centre where the warm temperatures made for poor ice conditions.
With the puck sticking and lots of water on the ice surface the Tigers defence were having trouble moving it out of the zone which leads to Katie Wilkinson of Leaside finding herself all alone in front of the Tiger net.
She was able to beat Hayward who was caught by surprise.
The Tigers never gave up and battled back later in the period tying the score on a goal by Jessica Gribbon and taking the lead on a break by Victoria Klimek.
With Gribbon and Miller each taking a penalty in the final periods the Wildcats could not penetrate the Tiger zone and Orangeville held on for a 2-1 win.
In game three of the tournament the Tigers faced off against the Mississauga Chiefs.
After a scoreless first, the Tigers were quickly reminded between the periods that they were not playing at their level.
Eight seconds into the second period, Klimek moved the puck forward off the draw Gribbon pounced on it and beat the Chiefs goalie to open the scoring.
The Tigers never looked back and continued to dominate the Chiefs which was highlighted by Sarah VanGalen making a nice pass to Gribbon who allowed Feiner to take the puck and score her first career goal.
Alexa Collette then got her first of the tournament off a nice pass from Poirier. Emily Hunwicks and Karlie Peel created havoc in the Chiefs zone leading to Klimek capping off the scoring in the third period.
The final score was Orangeville 5 Mississauga 0.
The Championship saw a rematch of the Leaside Wildcats and the Tigers at the Powerade Centre.
Two scoreless periods later, it looked as one goal would make the difference.
Hayward made a great toe save to hold her team in in the second period.
In the third Klimek got loose down the right side of the ice and fired the puck off the far post which then found the back of the net.
With everyone picking up their game the Wildcats pressed to hard which again lead to a Klimek breakaway and she made no mistake to beat Wildcat goalie Sharin-Smith on a nice deke to her backhand.
Final Score was Tiger 2- Wildcats 0.
On Saturday March 29th The Tigers had a one game final against the Scarborough Sharks at the Baycrest arena in Toronto for the Lower Lakes Novice "C" Championship.
The game was very tight and had the crowd on the edge of their seats right until the end.
Hayward made a great save on a high shot knocking the puck over the net.
The Sharks were able to beat Hayward only once only to be foiled by the goal post.
Klimek found the net in the third and again late in the game on a nice feed from Karlie Peel.
Coach Don Williamson thought everyone of his players played great and said it was a total team effort.
Congratulations go out to players Shanna Hayward, Alexa Collette, Karlie Peel, Jessica Gribbon, Madison Miller, Zoe Collis, Lauren Albano, Tatyana Feiner, Emily Hunwicks, Morgan Poirier, Victoria Klimek, Jessie Lewis and Sarah VanGalen. Congratulations to team staff members Coach Williamson, assistants Carl Peel, Scott Hayward, Matt Klimek, Trainers Connie Lewis, Melissa O'Driscoll, Manager Andrea Collette and Assistant manager Kathy Peel on a great season.
