Wolves heading west
The Orangeville Wolves Special Hockey team will be traveling to Kelowna, British Columbia for March Break 2009 to play the Special team in Kelowna.
The Kelowna squad is finishing their second year this year and have no one to play as they are the only Special team in Western Canada.
The Kelowna team, like the Wolves are made up of developmentally challenged athletes.
The Wolves will be traveling to B.C. instead of the Special Hockey International tournament in Minnesota and Wolves President and Founder Dan Stone commented on the decision. "We have been to tournaments in the United States three times already and while each has been a learning experience we need to try to do our part to develop Special Hockey right here in Canada."
The team in Kelowna has managed to arrange
for the two teams to play an exhibition game during the intermission of a Kelowna Rockets Jr. A hockey game.
The teams are also planning three other exhibition games throughout the weekend.
In anticipation of the trip the team has already raised enough funds for flights and accommodations for two nights in Kelowna.
The team has however received some interest from a group in Winnipeg wanting the team to stop there for an exhibition game as well so if funds permit the team would like to make additional stops in Winnipeg, and possibly Saskatoon, Edmonton, and Calgary.
This would be an excellent way of raising the profile of special hockey in Canada and would add another feather in the cap of Orangeville's team.
