What's likely a four-day weekend for a lot of local employees will start with a surprise early visit by the Stanley Cup to Orangeville and wind up with fireworks as part of the Orangeville Highlands Rotary Club's celebration of Canada's 141st anniversary at the Orangeville Fairgrounds in Mono.

Preceding Canada Day, it will be an interesting weekend in both Orangeville and Shelburne as the Stanley Cup makes its first appearance in Dufferin, and some tricky skate-boarders will compete in Orangeville's Rotary Park.

Kyle Quincey of Detroit Red Wings will bring The Cup to Orangeville's Alder Street arena from 9 to 10:30 Saturday morning, where it will be welcomed by Mayor Rob Adams.

Then he will accompany Aaron Downey, a Wings rightwinger and native of Melancthon, as the cup heads north to Shelburne and Honeywood. There'll be a parade in Shelburne and a shuttle bus to Honeywood for a $1 fare.

The big parade will start at about noon on Fiddle Park Lane, then head east to Greenwood, south to First Avenue, west to William Street, north to O'Flynn Street, north along Owen Sound Street and the Third Line of Melancthon.

Along with the Canada Day talent and the fireworks Tuesday, here's part of what to expect:

• Food and Refreshments will be available.

• There will be air brush face painting.

• HillCrest Private School will have crafts for kids.

• Blockbuster Video will be present.

• A bouncy castle for children will be on hand, and

• MP David Tilson will be there to speak at the talent show.

Talent contest participants can apply online at www.rcoh.ca or can call Jeff Bathurst at 519-942- 1827. Applications will be accepted until June 29.

Many volunteers will be assisting with parking at this year's event, and the club says donations would be graciously accepted.

The skate event at Rotary Park is the second annual 'Throw Down in O-Town,' and it features top performers from around the country in what spokesman Jessie Fulton says will be a nationally televised event.

Kyle Quincey, a defenceman, is a resident of the Orangeville area. Now 22, he played hockey in his formative years in Orangeville, playing Novice and Minor Atom in 1994 and 1995.

He later joined the Halton Hurricanes Triple A team.

Kyle spent his first season in the OHL with the London Knights after being drafted in the third round of the 2001 OHL draft.

He won Rookie of the Year as a defenceman with the London Knights. He has received attention as a star defenceman with the OHL's Mississauga Ice Dogs.

The 2005-2006 season was his first as a pro and his first with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

"It's exciting to see someone who played minor hockey in Orangeville, go so far," said Sandy Brown, president of the Orangeville Minor Hockey Association. "Hopefully, Kyle will get an opportunity to do this again during his career. We are all looking forward to seeing the Cup and congratulating Kyle."

Kyle's parents, Debbie and Marty Quincey, say they are very proud of Kyle and the commitment he has made to the sport. "At the age of 15, he made a serious commitment to diet and nutrition, to exercise and training," said Mrs. Quincey.

"We were always hockey parents. The two boys

Kyle, 22, and Kevin, 19) both wanted to play hockey, Marty helped coach, and hockey has been our life."

Both sons became defenceman and Kevin plays Jr. C in Walkerton. Mrs. Quincey says the family was on the ice and in the change-rooms while the champagne flowed and the cameras rolled on the night of the Stanley Cup Championships. "The Detroit Red Wings know how to treat the players and their families. It was amazing. What a gift to see a dream come true."

The Town of Orangeville is providing the Alder Street Recreation Centre for the event, which will allow the community to see the Stanley Cup, front and centre on the arena floor.

Mayor Rob Adams has proclaimed June 28 as Kyle Quincey Day in Orangeville to honour Kyle's accomplishments. He will be welcoming Kyle at Saturday's festivities, and Kyle will be available for photo opportunities with the Stanley Cup at no charge - and there will be pre-printed and signed photographs of Kyle hoisting the Cup. Those photos will be available at a cost of $10 with proceeds going to support Orangeville Minor Hockey and Halton Hurricanes Minor Hockey Alliance.

Aaron Downey, who played in 56 Red Wings games this year, will take the cup to Shelburne and Honeywood in the afternoon.

A native of Dufferin, Downey began his hockey life in Grand Valley in 1990 and Collingwood in 1991, thence to Guelph in the OHL. After stints that took him from Ontario to the Maritimes, U.S. Eastern Seaboard and Manitoba, he was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 1999.

Downey's 239 NHL career games as a 6 foot 1, 215 pound right winger have included the Bruins, Blackhawks, Stars and Canadiens as well as the Red Wings, who signed him as a free agent last year.

According to news reports, Downey will be back with the Wings for the 2008-09 season.
