A Super Senior, A Super Seniors' Week, and All That Jazz

2008-06-26 / Local News

Seniors' Week in Orangeville was a tremendous success. It was preceded by a bumper Blues and Jazz Festival attended by many seniors from across Ontario. In town, the week started on a healthy note with a Free Lane Swim and Walking Track for seniors at Alder Street Arena. However, the day was crowned when Mayor Rob Adams presented Dr. David Scott with a Provincial Senior of the Year Award.

Great Doctor Scott

Dr. Scott received the award, signed by The Honourable Aileen Carroll, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to his community. It is wonderful to see him receive a provincial award to acknowledge his dedication to health care, his community, and to the province. A life-long resident of Orangeville, Dr. Scott has provided outstanding leadership in health care for our area.

These are just some of his achievements and contributions:

Chair of the Alternative Health Care Delivery System Steering Committee, which brought about the voluntary amalgamation of Dufferin Area Hospital and Shelburne District Hospital in 1993.

Founder of the Dufferin Linkages Committee which ultimately led to the establishment of the Headwaters Communities in Action initiative.

Not only does he receive honours he also has an annual award - the Dr. Scott Award- named for him. It recognizes others who have made an outstanding contribution to health care in Dufferin- Caledon.

He currently serves as a key member of the Greater Dufferin Area Physician Search Committee and he chairs the Physicians Liaison Committee.

Dr. Scott and his wife Huda are honourary chairs of the Building Dreams Together capital campaign for Community Living Dufferin and Theatre Orangeville.

Congratulations, Dr. Scott!

At The Forum

On Thursday, of Seniors Week, the Mayor's Seniors' Advisory Committee held its first Seniors Forum. A crowd of over 90 seniors joined us at the Lord Dufferin Centre (LDC). The LDC treated us to a magnificently delicious luncheon and scrumptious snacks throughout the day. The seniors were pleasantly surprised to receive a basket, donated by Harmony Whole Foods, containing all manner of delights upon their arrival. We were regaled with great tales from guest speakers Jake Dheer and Wayne Townsend before being entertained by bright and beautiful voices of The Lord Dufferin Choir, and Siobhan O' Brien accompanied by Joy Bell. There were a number of booths providing a wealth of information regarding seniors issues. Three seniors were lucky enough to win

a joyride with Bert Gauthier in his vintage car! crown

A Complete Week

To complete the week, there was dinner available at the Royal Legion on Friday evening. And on Saturday, seniors were welcomed with gifts and entertainment at the Market on Broadway. Thank-you Janice Gooding.

What a way to recognize our seniors who have given so much to our community.
