Kings rule to drop Arthur 12-2

Photo/MIKE MALONEY The Orangeville Kings improved their Inter-county Fastball record to 7-1-0 thanks to a 12-2 romp over league leading Arthur on the Idlewyld diamond Tuesday night.
For the Kings, this game proved to be just what the doctor ordered. Last Monday, Grand Valley handed Orangeville their first loss of the season then were forced to sit one out when their Tuesday home game against Dundalk was postponed due to weather.
After shutting down an early Arthur challenge off the top of one with runners on first and second, Orangeville wasted no time in getting their idle bats swinging.
A double to left centre by Rich Long would bring Kent Campbell home to score first for the Kings.
A single by Jeff Donaldson brought home Long while a pair of infield errors first put Joel Pegg on base, then allowed him to score before a single off the bat of first basemen Rick Zeggil cashed in Donaldson to make it 4-0 for Orangeville.
The onslaught continued in the bottom of two.
With Brent Rowan and Campbell sitting on one and two, Kings third baseman Phil Gordon launched a shot deep over the centre-field fence for a three run homer. Pegg followed up with a solo shot of his own to the left side before Zeggil popped out to end the second inning with Orangeville in control of the game at 8-0.
Arthur managed to tag a pair to Pegg in the top of three. With two out Jim Culling's double would score Matt Nevills while Todd Swift brought home Culling on a single before Pegg took down the third out swinging to end the inning.
Orangeville's bats continued swinging through their half of the third. With two out, Rowan and Campbell again found themselves in scoring position. First it would be Gordon cashing Campbell on a short chopper across second followed by another three run homer, this one by Long over the right field fence to make it 12-2.
Neither squad was able to get much going through four with both teams stranding lone base runners in their half of the inning.
With Arthur bringing up the top of the order for only the third time on the night, Pegg struck out the first two batters and Swift popped out to end the game in the fifth inning with Orangeville recording the 12-2 win.
Fastball action returns to Idlewyld at 9 p.m. next Tuesday when Dundalk and Orangeville try again to get in their rained out game from June 17th.
