Vets beat Durham
The Shelburne Veterans team pulled yet another rabbit out if their hat, coming from behind yet again again against the West Durham Patriots to win 9-7 on the road Monday night in Junior C lacrosse action.
First period action saw the two teams which are currently tied for second behind Centre Wellington and Caledon, swap goals through the first 20 minutes of play. Hard work and determination from both squads worked to keep the score deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the second with Matt Volpe, Jon Nevills and Travis Galbraith doing the honours for Shelburne.
Of the top of two, West Durham edged ahead by one when they snuck one past Tyler Matice at 2:40.
Back to back goals from Galbraith and captain Cory Sinclair would give the Vets a taste of things to come in the third to go ahead 5-4 only to have the Patriots answer back with two of their own in the final minute to again regain the lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
In the third, the Veterans came out with sticks blazing. Galbraith kicked off the scoring parade with his third of the
night followed up by an unassisted marker from Cameron Grasman to regain the lead at 11:03.
Cory Sinclair would set up both Volpe and Nevills for each of their second goals at 11:09 and 14:17 respectively.
West Durham would score just once more with just over four minutes left to play but from that point on, Mattice shut the back door and the Shelburne Veterans went on to win by a final score of 9-7.
Action returns to the 'Bunker' at the CDRC this Friday night when league leading Caledon comes a calling followed by Centre Wellington the Friday after, July 4th. Start time for both games is 8 p.m.
