Minor Tykes just miss tournament finals

The Boston Pizza Major Tyke Northmen found themselves in tournament play in Owen Sound this past weekend and fell one win short from a trip to the finals.

Orangeville opened the tournament against the host North Stars and turned a tight 4-3 lead going into the third, to a 9-4 victory.

Liam McIllwraith paced the offence with a three goal night and Quinten Schneider added two goals.

Elgin Cooke, Devon Dunkerley, Keegan Madden and Ryan Bowie rounded out the scoring with a goal each while Kurtis Cotton, Tristan Williams, Tanner Buck and goaltender Dawson Drury chipped in with assists each.

McIllwraith scooped up 14 loose balls to take home the Dairy Queen Loose Ball award.

The Northmen faced a young Innisfil team in game two and took a while to get started, leading 1-0 after one, but scored five in the second and six in the third to run away with a 12-0 thumping.

Madden led the offence with three goals and three assists and Cooke picked up four goals and an assist.

Multiple point nights from Cian Davies (1,1), Jackson Hand (0,2), Buck (2,1), Dunkerley (1,2) and Bowie (1,1) as well as single assists from Jordan Halsall and McIllwraith contributed to the win.

Drury recorded the shut-out in goal and Cooke led Orangeville with 13 loose balls.

Sarnia and the Northmen hooked up for a defensive battle in game three and it wasn't until 6:10 into the second period before Orangeville was the first on the board.

That gave the Northmen some momentum going into the third and added three more for a 4-0 win.

Cooke picked a pair, Buck and Schneider scored a goal a piece and Davies, Halsall and Williams gathered assists.

Drury was very strong in net, picking up his second shut-out of the day and Schneider picked up the loose ball award with 11 in the game.

In the final round-robin game, Orangeville just needed to win and tie a period to get enough points in the tournament point system to secure a spot in the finals.

The task would be tough against the eventual tournament champions from Burlington, who hadn't lost a game or a period all weekend.

The Northmen showed up ready to battle, as the 33 minutes in penalties the two teams accumulated in the game would show.

Burlington opened up a 3-0 lead early in the second before Bowie scored from Williams and Buck to get Orangeville back into the game, but that would be all the offence Orangeville could muster and fall to an 8-1 defeat.

During regular league play earlier in the week, the Northmen hosted Mimico, losing 7-2.

Buck and Cooke were the goal scorers and Madden and goalie Drury picked up assists. Alex Beam, playing his first game with the Tykes, was the loose ball leader with nine.

The Boston Pizza Northmen are off this week before travelling for a game in Mimico and then Hamilton for the Super Series tournament in the first week of July.
