2008-07-03 / Local News

The Orangeville Optimists' 10th annual Million Dollar Hole in One Challenge is under way this week.

Starting yesterday and running until next Sunday, July 6 at Johnson Controls on C Line, golf lovers have a chance of a lifetime.

The event is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The playoffs begin Sunday at 3:15 p.m.

The closest 10 people to the pin each day win prizes and qualify for the $200 Prize Shoot Out each evening at 8:15. They also qualify for the Sunday "Major Prize" Finals.

Maybe you can qualify too? Each purchase of a bucket of balls helps the Optimists to help the community. The driving range's distance to the hole is 95 yards for the qualifying competition.

This year's final event on Sunday features five guaranteed cash prizes. At the finals, qualifiers also take shots at winning $1 million, a new Toyota from Hallmark Toyota or other prizes.

The Optimists hosted a Kids Only Competition on Tuesday, with young golfers 12 and under welcomed.

Female golfers will enjoy a Ladies Day on Friday and a $50,000 Ladies Only Shoot-off on Sunday.

The Orangeville Optimist Club's motto is "Friend of Youth." The club generates funds through fundraising events like the Million Dollar Hole in One and uses those funds to operate the Maple Syrup Festival, the Jack Rabbits Cross Country Ski Training, Christmas in the Park, Breakfast With Santa, the Junior World of Golf and more.
