Contracts awarded for town works projects
Orangeville Council has given the go-ahead for public works projects to be carried out by contractors who have submitted the winning tenders.
The work includes supply and installation of a pool dehumidification system for the pool at the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Complex, sanitary sewer replacement on Little York and Armstrong Streets, as well as road rehabilitation work on Sherbourne Street, Townline, John Street, Faulkner Street, and the laneway between Clara and Louisa Streets.
Contracts have also been awarded for sidewalk construction on Townline and Fourth Avenue, and sidewalk repairs throughout the town.
The Tony Rose installation contract has been awarded to Thermotech Air Services Ltd. of Orangeville, who came in with a bid of $205,200. The town had put aside $240,000 for the project in its 2008 budget and the difference will be put toward additional repairs and upgrades to the pool area and change rooms.
The capital project on Little York and Armstrong involves re-routing the Little York Street sanitary sewer by connecting it into the Armstrong Street sewer to accommodate additional flow.
Design drawings and specifications were prepared by Triton Engineering Services Ltd. and the project was put up for tender. Three bids were submitted with the Drexler Construction bid of just over $662,000 winning out.
Bidders on the road rehabilitation contract submitted two separate bids each. One bid to perform the work by pulverizing and reusing existing asphalt and the other to excavate and remove the existing asphalt.
The winning bid was submitted by GCCL Contracting Ltd., which had bids of $193,755 for the former and $192,476 for the latter. The decision on which method to deploy will be made in the field at the time of construction.
C & G Concrete Inc. submitted a tender of $63,278, to perform the sidewalk building and repair, which council accepted.
Councillor Sylvia Bradley asked that where new sidewalk panels need to be installed, consideration be given to changing the finish of the sidewalk panel so as to eliminate the small depression present beside the crack joints.
The depression is typically around two to three millimetres wide, but the request to eliminate it is to better accommodate people in wheelchairs.
