The Rayburn Construction Northmen are well on their way in their quest for gold at the Minto Cup Canadian Junior A Lacrosse championships being held currently in Calgary.

Heavily favoured by many as the main contender for this years top honours, Orangeville rode into Calgary last weekend where they wasted no time in making a name for themselves, dumping Edmonton 18-2 in their first game of the round robin portion of the championship.

Adam Jones started things with a pair for Orangeville off the top for Orangeville. Brandon Ivey then teamed up with Jones to make it 3-0 before Edmonton would score their first at 10:25 mark.

Jones would again find the range, scoring an unassisted power-play marker before Jeff Ivey and Matt Murray rounded out the first period scoring with the score 6-1 for Orangeville.

The Northmen went on to score another 11 unanswered goals before Edmonton could get only their second and final goal at the midway point of the third.

Stephen Keogh led that pack of Northmen snipers with three, Sean Gillies notching two and another pair for Jeff Ivey to make the hat-trick.

Jason Noble, Andrew Suitor, Matt McLeod and Garret Kerr each chipped in singles before Jones wrapped up the scoring with his fourth on the night to seal the win for Orangeville.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Jones was quoted in media reports the next day noting how Edmonton started strong but faded late in the game. "They worked hard, but I think in the third they didn't work too hard coming back into their own end", he said adding "that last little bit, they just laid off".

Heading into this tournament, the Northmen transition game was felt by many to be one of their most potent weapons.

Before Saturday nights games, Jones and his team mates had a chance to watch Calgary and Victoria in the opening game. "Our transition is going to be the key", he

Jones. "We watched Victoria Friday night so if we run like we did tonight, I think we said Jones.

And that they did on Monday adding some of the physical component that has also figured in many of their outings as well this season.

Keogh drew first blood for Orangeville with his first two of three on the night, framing either side of one by Gillies 8:26 into the first.

Jeff Ivey would make it 4-0 before Shamrocks Michael Pires managed to put a squeaker past Nick Rose in the Orangeville net. Ivey would round out the period with just over a minute left to again go ahead by four.

Jeremy Noble and Glen Bryan added to the Northmen fortunes off the top of two while Bryan also set up Gillies for his second on the night.

Victoria would get three back by the third minute mark of the final frame only to have Suitor and Keogh come back with Orangeville goals to raise the Shamrock frustration level.

A procession of Shamrocks and Northmen made their way to the penalty box over the final six minutes of play punctuated by a lone Victoria power-play goal to end the scoring and with Orangeville securing their second win as many games, this one by a 10-5 decision.

With one game left in the round robin portion, Orangeville needs a win on Wednesday night against host Calgary to ensure them in a berth in Saturday nights Cup final against either Calgary or Victoria who eliminated Edmonton from further contention by defeating the Miners 11-5 on
