Compostable bags only

2008-09-04 / Mailbox

The County of Dufferin would like to clarify information given by Wes Keller in his article "Now it might be green bags with green bins". In the article, he refers to 'recyclable green plastic bags', as potential new liners for the Green Bin program in Dufferin County.

This is incorrect, as the County will not be allowing any plastic bags in the program. Compostable bags made of vegetable starch will be allowed in the program, which are opaque in nature and come in different colours depending on the brand (i.e. brown, opaque white).

These bags are plastic looking, but are not oil based plastic (like shopping bags, white kitchen garbage bags and the green clear plastic bags that are on the market). Compostable bags that have the rectangular 'COMPOSTABLE'logo on the package will be allowed, if approved by County Council on September 11th.

In the mean time, residents are encouraged to line their kitchen container with paperbased products such as paper bags or a few sheets of newspaper. Residents should call the County at (519) 941-2816, x2620 if they have any questions.
