Minto championship caps successful season for Northmen

Another Northmen who had a great tournament was Jeff Ivey, one of four players including Keogh, Matt McNutt and Garret Kerr in their last year of eligibility with the team. A Northmen since his rookie season five years ago, Ivey has struggled with injuries over the last couple of seasons. Speaking on the phone from university in the States earlier this week, he says, "the feeling is amazing, even now, days later it still feels unreal."

As for his five-year tenure with the team, Ivey says it has been a great experience playing for Orangeville adding, "This is the best way to go out, I couldn't ask for any more."

And for Northmen coach Matt Sawyer, who took over the reins behind the bench four years ago from Lindsay Sanderson, it was nothing but pride in his team. "I am real proud of these guys. We were out there for 12 days and the boys handled it well. They stayed focused, even though it was easy to get distracted, but they knew they had a job to do and they did it."

Team captain Glen Bryan says that the boys knew coming out to Calgary wasn't going to be enough, "We needed to go out and win."

Bryan noted how Victoria came on through the second period but that the team settled down, got back to the game plan and took control through the third. "It was a total team effort."

Bryan is already looking forward to next season. With the Minto Cup scheduled to be played in Brampton next summer, he is confident in his team's chances to defend the title back here in Ontario, where they will be able to share the experience with their local fans.
