Novice acclaimed as NDP candidate
A couple of months ago, Bolton resident Jason Bissett didn't even belong to a political party, but as of Monday night, he's a nominated candidate.
Mr. Bissett, 39, was acclaimed as the New Democratic Party candidate in Dufferin - Caledon in the Oct. 14 federal election.
This is the first time the father of two has entered a political race. He said he was prompted by his concern for things like the economy, health care and education — things that matter to ordinary Canadians. "I'm one of them," he said.
Mr. Bissett works in sales of industrial equipment and has lived in Bolton eight years. He said he's only been a member of the party for a couple of months, adding that when he entered, he wanted to know who the local candidates were. "The opportunity came up, and I decided to pursue," he explained.
He said he realizes the coming campaign is going to be a challenge. "I know it's going to be a battle, coming in so late," he commented, also observing the riding is traditionally Conservative. "I'm going to take it from there."
He was a little more optimistic when it came to commenting on the NDP's chances in general.
"I have a really good feeling," he said, adding he thinks there's a lot of support for the party out there. He also said a lot of the NDP policies are close to what a lot of people hold true.
Conservative incumbent David Tilson is also being challenged by Liberal Rebecca Finch, Green Party candidate Ard Van Leeuwen and Dean Woods of the Canadian Action Party.
