Former Shelburne reeve passes

Allan David McKelvie Allan David McKelvie Allan David McKelvie, a businessman who served as Shelburne's reeve and Dufferin's warden in the 1970s, died Monday at Dufferin Oaks, where a wing of the original seniors' home bears his name.

He was a son of the late Dr. and Mrs. S. K. McKelvie, a well-respected Shelburne veterinarian.

Mr. McKelvie and his wife Helen operated McKelvie's Family Shop on Main Street for a number of years and Allan spent 1968 and 1969 on Shelburne Council as a councillor and then from 1970 to 1974 as Reeve, retiring in 1974. He served as Warden of Dufferin County in 1972.

Allan was also a long-time member of the Shelburne Citizens' Band and with the late Grant Bell formed its baritone section.

He is survived by his wife Helen; his son Stephen (and his wife Shanna); daughters Mary (and her late husband Patrick Jones) and Joanne (and her husband Cliff Jerome); and his cherished grandchildren, Claire, David, Laura, Alex and Sam.

He is also survived by his brothers Dr. Douglas McKelvie and Bob McKelvie. He was predeceased by his brother Jack. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. Allan's presence and contribution to the community will be greatly missed.

On Wednesday the family received friends at the Doney Funeral home and the funeral service will take place today (Thursday, November 6), from the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Shelburne Cemetery.

The family have asked that donations be made to the Dufferin Oaks Home for Senior Citizens.
