Muskies claw 10 - 6 win from T'cats
The Shelburne Muskies continue to gobble up their competition in WOAA Senior Mens hockey action. Taking their show on the road this past weekend, Shelburne improved their 2008-09 season record to a perfect 5-0 by dropping the Durham Thundercats 10-6 on Friday then edged past Lucknow on Saturday night with a 4-3 decision over the Lancers.
Traditionally, when Durham and Shelburne meet up, the penalty box becomes a home away from home for both teams and Friday night's game proved to be no different; providing many scoring chances for both teams.
Brad Horan would open the scoring on for Shelburne on their first powerplay opportunity at 14:42 of the first. The 'Cats would get that back five minutes later only to have Chad Boulton combine with Anthony Potoschwick to again put the Fish ahead by one.
Durham would once again draw even at 2-2 to end the first but that would be as close as they would get.
Chris Greer set the pace for Shelburne early in period two, teaming up with Bill Boyes just 40 seconds in followed up by a powerplay maker from Derrick Robson.
Chris Ritchie did it the hard way, scoring one shorthanded for Shelburne followed up with both Kevin Tuckey and Potoschwick taking powerplay feeds from Mark MacArthur on either side of Durham's lone goal of the frame, making it 7-3 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
Potoschwick made it a hat-trick off the top of three but the Thundercats kept up the challenge, slipping two past Senay to set the score at 8-5 with 7:51 left on the clock.
Searching for the equalizer, Durham opted to pull goalie Troy Loucks in favour of an extra attacker but the plan backfired as Horan tagged a pair of empty netters against one by Thundercats John Kovacs, making it a 10-6 decision in favour of Shelburne at the final buzzer.
Playing against Lucknow for the first time in two years, the Fish came out flying on Saturday.
Picking up where he had left off the night before, Horan again opened the scoring at 15:57 of the first then assisted with Ritchie on Sean Connor's goal at 7:23.
Lucknow managed to get one back late in the first then pocketed a pair in the second against one by Shelburne, again off the stick of Horan making it 3-3 heading into the third.
With both squads looking for a edge, it was the Muskies that found it first. With Lancers Brad Robinson serving time for hooking, Horan again was the go-to guy, converting a setup from Connor and McArthur to go ahead 4-3 at 13:34, where the score would remain for the balance to give Shelburne their fifth win of the season.
This weekend finds the Fish at home hosting the Shallow Lake Crushers with a 6:30 p.m. start time to be followed immediately after the game by their annual Leukemia fundraising dance.
Featuring live entertainment by the Larry Melton band, combined game/dance tickets can be purchased in advance for $15 or at the door on Saturday night where the prices will be $6 for the game and $12 to get into the dance.
