Crushers post back to back wins over Bruins
THE EFFORTS of Crushers forward were enough to earn him first star recongnition in Friday nights 5-2 win over the Seguin Bruins. Photo/MIKE MALONEY The Orangeville Crushers are back in winning form, sweeping a home-and-home series against the Seguin Bruins this past weekend by scores of 5-2 and 7-3.
Friday night was played before the hometown crowd and this Crushers team did not fail to entertain the crowd in attendance.
Mike Arnold opened the scoring just over seven minutes into the first period with assists by Kyle Manduck and Matt Crilly.
Dylan Hutton teamed up with defenseman Norm Ezekiel to make it 2-0 midway through the second only to have the Bruins roar back with one of their own to keep it close at 2-1.
In the third, Steven Beyers put the moves on Bruins goalie Chance Lieb, dancing across the crease and tossing one into the left side just 27 seconds into the period.
Four minutes later, Curtis Longland picked his own rebound out of Lieb's pads and notched a powerplay goal for the Crushers.
Seguin would again capitalize on some sloppy play by the Crushers in their own end to draw back within two .But, from that point on, Orangeville cager Tyler Kimmel turned away all Bruin advances while Devin Mantha sealed the win with an empty net goal at 18:48 to make the final score 5-2 in favour of the Crushers.
Saturday night saw the Crushers again take control early, pummeling Lieb with a total of 47 shots in the first period. Three of those shots would find the range, two off the stick of Beyers and one by Daniel Goyette to make it 3-0 at the end of one.
The shot onslaught tapered off in the second but the scoring did not.
Hutton pocketed his sixth of the season at 6:34, while Cody Britton converted the help of Shane Cater and Jarrod Connelly into his first with the club in seven games so far this season.
Seguin slipped one past Andy Groulx at 11:53 of the second and looked poised to take a run at Orangeville, scoring their second midway through the third. Orangeville coach Dale Hawerchuk soon settled down his charges, who answered back with two more of their own courtesy of Arnold and Longland each scoring their second of the weekend.
Bruins Garrett Sargis tapped one more past Groulx, but that would be all the offence they could muster with Orangeville cruising from there to a 7-3 final.
With the weekend wins, Orangeville continues to sit fourth in their division, two points back of Aurora and Huntsville who are currently tied at 34.
This weekend ahead may give Orangeville an opportunity to close that gap.
Friday it will be Upper Canada taking on the Crushers. On Saturday, Huntsville will be the team to beat as the Otter make the trek south to Orangeville. Start time for both these games is 7:30 at the Alder Street Community Centre.
