Crushers pass halfway point in fourth
Orangeville Crushers have passed the midway point of their 2008-09 season, finding themselves with their best record to date since joining the the Ontario Provincial Junior A Tier II ranks.
Currently they hold down fourth place in the highly competitive Phillips division with a record of 18 wins against only eight losses.
Over the past weekend, the Crushers split a pair of games, losing at home 6-2 against Georgetown on Friday, only to rebound Saturday night on the road, blanking Dixie 2-0.
Friday night, the Crushers found themselves in tough against a very determined Raiders squad.
A pair of power-play goals had Georgetown out front by two until just past the midway point of the second, when Daniel Goyette teamed up with Steven Beyers to put Orangeville on the board.
A lone goal by Dylan Hutton in the third would be it for Orangeville as some familiar faces to the Crushers, Chris Borges, Trevor Branning and Jeremy Wick made the most of their return to town with Wick scoring twice, Borges adding one of his own and three assists along with Branning's lone assist leading Georgetown to a 6-2 win.
Saturday night, the Crushers played a closely contested match against the Dixie Beehives in Weston.
Playing scoreless through the first two periods, it came down to a shooting duel between the two teams in the third.
Kirk Evely's powerplay goal assisted by Hutton and Matt Crilly just over three minutes into the third would prove to be the game winner, while Beyers' insurance marker tossed into an empty net with 34 seconds left on the clock, iced the win for Orangeville.
Again Andy Groulx did everything asked of him, turning away 37 shots on the night to record his fifth shutout of the season.
This weekend ahead will prove to be another busy one for the Crushers as they head out for a three-game road swing.
Their first stop will be the Canlan Sportsplex in North York on Friday against the Villanova Knights. That will be followed by a trip north to Huntsville to face off against the Otters Saturday. Then its back to Aurora for a matinee tilt against the Tigers at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
