Novice Flyers rout Avalanche

With another couple of wins at home last week, the Southwood Graphics Flyers increased their stranglehold on first place in the Tri-County Novice AA standings. Orangeville's record now stands at 19-1, 14 points ahead of second place Caledon, who have five games in hand.

The Flyers hosted Ancaster last Monday night holding a 1- 0 lead after a sluggish first period, but lit up the scoreboard with three goals in both the second and third periods.

Ancaster spoiled goalie Liam McIllwraith's bid for a shut-out with 6:53 left in the game when Orangeville held 5-0 lead.

The final score ended 7-1 in favour of the Flyers. Ryan Boon paced the attack with five points and Kurtis Cotton had a three point night.

Owen Robinson and Brendan Chapman picked up two points each while Tristan Williams, Dakota Zarudny and Evan Moore rounded out the scoring with one each.

Two nights later, Orangeville hosted second place Flamborough, the only team to have beaten the Flyers this season.

After a scoreless first period, Orangeville scored two short-handed goals within 10 seconds of each other then added another goal before the period ended to take a 3-0 lead into the third.

As has happened in past games with the Sabres, Flamborough battled back and scored a pair of goals in the opening 3:03 of the final period to get within one.

The Flyers quickly rebounded and restored their two goal cushion, scoring 26 seconds later.

Orangeville soon found themselves into penalty trouble, being whistled for five minor penalties over a four and one half minute span and were two man short for 2:22.

The Flyers were able to kill off those penalties, but the Sabres would pull their goalie and net one with 44 seconds left to make the score 4-3.

Flamborough would press for the equalizer, but Orangeville managed to hold on for the victory.

Boon led the way with three points and Cotton chipped in with a two point game.

Moore and Chapman contribute with a point a piece.

McIllwraith was very strong in goal, picking up the victory for the Flyers.

The Southwood Graphics Novices travel to Milton on Monday and host Georgetown on Wednesday night at 7:00 at Alder Street Arena.
