Atom Flyers edge Rangers 3-1

2009-01-08 / Sports

Home ice and a first place ranking was not intimidating enough to deter a gritty Flyers Minor Atom AE squad who took their show on the road to defeat the league leading Oakville Rangers in their own rink by a final score of 3-1.

This was the second time Orangeville has triumphed over the almost unbeaten Rangers.

The first period ended scoreless with neither team able to get a footing past the blue line. Centre ice saw most of the action thanks to some very determined defense work from both teams.

The tide would start to turn in the favour of the Flyers with Alex Kampen getting one past Oakville's goalie Justin Hui with help from Frankie Meli half way through the second.

This would set the tone for the rest of the game.

In the opening seconds of the third, Patrick Williams raced past the Rangers' defense along the boards as teammate Franki Meli zoomed up the other side to arrive just in time to one-time the pass from Williams into the net.

Ranger's Justin Lyttle would add some suspense to the game scoring with 6:44 left to go.

Looking to score the equalizer, Oakville pulled their goalie in the final minutes of the game.

Williams would bust the puck free from a three-way tangle just inside the Ranger's end sending it towards the net.

Just as the puck was going to run out of steam before its destination, Kampen banged it in giving the Flyers the last say on the scoreboard.
