Muskies atone for loss with 6-1 win

2009-01-22 / Sports

Everyone who has dropped a line into a pond has a story about the one that got away. This weekend, the Shelburne Muskies added one of their own when the Fish let a three goal lead slip away to the Ripley Wolves who scored with 1:45 left on the clock to edge Shelburne 6-5.

This game started out well for the Muskies, up 3-1 at the end of the first on goals from Zac Duerden, Anthony Pototschnik and Sean Connor.

Ripley took advantage of a less-than-100-percent effort from the Fish to chip away at their lead and score two of their own to tie the game. Shelburne added another on the power play when Matt Lougheed and Pototschnik set up Chris Greer late in the second.

Again finding themselves tied after a Wolves goal just over a minute into the third, Brad Horan scored a powerplay goal to give Shelburne some short lived breathing room.

Sniffing a victory, Ripley continued to nip at the Muskies until Shea Armstrong slipped one past Rob Senay in the dying minutes to snag the win away for Ripley.

Smarting from the loss the night before, a much sharper Muskie squad took to the ice back home at the CDRC on Saturday night against Lucknow.

With Derek Smith, Bill Boyes and Horan leading the way, Shelburne again found themselves with a 3-1 lead heading into the mid-frame.

This time however, there would be no repeats of Friday night.

With the Muskie defense keeping Lucknow's snipers to the outside, Senay did his part between the pipes, turning away those pucks that manage to make it to the crease.

Chuck Mesley and Greg Patton each chipped in with second period markers while Derek Smith put the last marks on the score sheet early in the third, snapping a shot from the point on the power play to make it 6-1.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Shelburne currently sits second in the North Division standings, three points back of Saugeen Shores.

Both games are big ones for the Muskies but possibly the most important of the two is Friday nights contest in Elora against the Rocks.

Elora sits just two points back of Shelburne and a win by the Rocks could edge the Fish into third should they fail to defeat Saugeen in their final outing.

With playoff rankings and home ice advantage on the line, you can count on the Muskie coaching staff to be driving this point home to their players.

Game time for Friday nights match against the Rocks is 8:30 p.m. at the Elora Community Centre.
