Crushers double up over Tigers

Orangeville Crushers continued their drive down the regular season stretch by winning two of a three-game home stand this past weekend.

Hooking up first on Friday night against Dixie, Orangeville may have given up the first goal, but all was forgiven as they rolled to a 7-2 victory.

In the first, it was Robert Visca, Mike Arnold, Curtis Longland and Devin Mantha recording goals for Orangeville while Jarrod Connelly scored the lone second period marker.

In the third, both Longland and Connelly each made it two for the night, with goals at 4:33 and 9:15 respectively, while Andy Groulx faced a total of 29 shots to record yet another win between the pipes for Orangeville.

Up against Couchiching on Saturday, the Crushers played stride for stride through the first 40 minutes of play with the division leading Terriers, heading into the third tied at 2-2 on goals from Arnold and Connelly.

Unfortunately for Orangeville, Couchiching made the most of the few chances they were given, scoring three unanswered goals off the top of the third while shutting down the Crushers offence to skate out of the Alder Street rink with a 5-2 victory.

Redemption, however, would not be long in coming for the boys in black in orange.

Suiting up Tuesday night and with seven regulars out of the lineup, Orangeville played one of their gutsiest games, doubling the Aurora Tigers by a final score of 8-4.

With the line of Connelly, Mantha and Arnold—possibly one of the hottest lines in the league right now—leading the way, the trio combined for a total of five goals and five assists on the night.

Crilly would collect the other three Orangeville markers with Groulx again coming up with a big night in goal for the Crushers.

For Connelly, the taste of victory was particularly sweet, recording his first hat-trick of the season with Orangeville.

Downplaying his own accomplishments after the game, he attributes not just his success, but that of the team as a whole to hard work and effort. "It's just good teamwork. You gotta be playing all 60 minutes and right now everyone is out there playing hard and playing together."

With five games remaining in the regular season, it is likely that they will be facing off against North York in the opening round of the playoffs. What remains to be seen, however, is which of the two teams will hold home-ice advantage.

Currently, North York sits a single point ahead of Orangeville in fourth place of the Phillips division standings but with a game in hand, they could still overtake the Rangers.

This weekend finds the Crushers on the road both Friday and Saturday.

First it will be north to Rama where they hook up again for a 7:30 start against Couchiching. Then it's back on the bus and a trip south on Saturday to the land of Dixie for the first of two remaining games against the Beehives.
