Families in Motion Day set for Alder Street rec centre
You can enjoy a free swim or skate, watch sports demonstrations, or play Wii games and take part in any number of other activities at Orangeville's Families in motion Day next Monday, February 16, at the Alder Street Recreation Centre.
The Town of Orangeville will offer lane swims, aquafit, a family swim and a low impact swim, ticket ice, open shinny, open skate, a sports group information fair, children's games and library service. There will be free RBC Community Skates in both the green and red rinks from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the Town will offer a free skate in both rinks from 1:30-3:30 p.m. There will be free Hallmark Toyota public swims from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2-3 p.m. (Unless noted as a free program, regular fees will apply.)
Our national lacrosse champions will have a presence during the day. The Junior A Northmen organization will be showing videos of their championship games and will have the Minto Cup on display.
A special guest appearance is planned by RBC Olympian Lori Dupuis who has two Olympic medals.
As a member of the national women's hockey team at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, Lori won an Olympic gold medal. She won an Olympic silver medal four years earlier in Nagano. A native of Cornwall, Lori starred on the Varsity Blues women's hockey team from 1991- 97 and served as team captain for three years. She is known for her power and speed on the ice and has earned five OWIAA (Ontario Women's Interuniversity Athletic Association) allstar awards. She was twice nominated for the University of Toronto's female athlete of the year. Lori also won gold in all three of the World Championships in which she participated (1997, 1999 and 2000). She runs the Jayna Hefford/Lori Dupuis Hockey School for Girls in Kingston and she continues to play with the Brampton Thunder of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL).
Events at Orangeville's Families in motion Day include a Minor Hockey skills competition; demonstrations by the Orangeville Tennis Club, Tom's Martial Arts, Access Fitness, and Skate Canada Orangeville; free pizza samples from Hogey's Restaurant and the walking track is free all day.
