More myths corrected
I want to correct the myths about The Highland Companies that appeared in last week's 'Mailbox.'
Myth: Our land will not be used for farming: In fact, agriculture is and will remain one of our cornerstone activities in the community. Thanks to our nearly 70 terrific managers and employees, we've built one of the best potato farming operations in Ontario. We've achieved a 30% growth in volume, modernized our equipment and facilities, and expanded into Norfolk County. We anticipate that our water studies will enable the irrigation of 500 acres of our farmland in Melancthon during the 2009 crop year.
Myth: Our actions mean that the land will be used only for agriculture or only for some other use: In fact, and as I've said before, we are exploring uses in addition to, not in place of, our farm operation in Melancthon. Others in the community have examined wind power and aggregates. We are doing the same. We will continue to study our natural environment and archeological heritage as required when considering any additional land uses. Like our neighbours, we will continue to take steps to improve our farming operation, including managing trees and water. In doing so, we will continue to work with the appropriate agencies and comply with their requirements.
Myth: I was quoted in a June 2007 newspaper article saying that my only focus was on potato farming: In fact, no such quote appeared because I didn't say it. My actual comments, emailed to the newspaper in May 2007, stated that "My fellow investors and I are committed to the growth and success of Downey Potato Farms. We expect the company to continue potato farming operations for years to come." That information is as true today as it was then.
Myth: We are looking to operate "a private rail line" along the Dufferin County right of way: In fact, we've said that the current railway has to increase, not reduce, its scale, volume and number of shippers if it is to be viable. We're encouraged by the interest being shown by users of the current railway and by companies that would consider moving to the area if the rail line is extended.
Myth: That we are promising and will then remove tourist train travel between Owen Sound and Toronto: In fact, there has been no discussion about any tourist train service beyond the existing Credit Valley Explorer. In our agreement to acquire the Orangeville- Brampton Railway, the Explorer will continue to be allowed to operate under existing agreements.
