Novice AA Flyers sweep Oakville in three

After losing two games late in the season to Oakville, the Southwood Graphics Novice AA Flyers were expecting a tough five game series against the Rangers.

What they got Wednesday night in Orangeville was an unexpected 10-2 rout of Oakville in the first game of the series.

The Rangers opened the scoring at the 7:30 mark of a tight first period, but the Flyers would score seven unanswered goals to build a 7-1 lead late in the third.

Oakville scored with 3:25 remaining in the game before Orangeville continued their dominance and added three more before the final buzzer.

Brendan Chapman led all scorers with six points and Ryan Boon added four points. Ryan Bowie and Owen Robinson picked up three points a piece while Evan Moore and Dakota Zarudny notched two each. Tristan Williams and Elgin Cooke rounded out the scoring with a point each. With regular goalie Liam McIllwraith out with an upper body medical condition, Novice AE goalie Mason Kameka stepped in and had an incredible game, especially in the first period, shutting down the Ranger offence.

Saturday night the series shifted to Oakville for game two and the Flyers wanted keep their momentum going to get off to a good start.

Orangeville did just that, opening up a 2-0 lead 3:37 into the game.

The Rangers bounced back with some good pressure and were rewarded with three straight second period goals to take their first lead of the series.

The Flyers would regain control of the game and tie it up with 35 seconds left in the middle period.

Orangeville turned up the forechecking and add three more goals in the third to take a 6-3 victory.

Robinson, Boon and Chapman scored two points a piece and Kyle Whitton, Williams, Zarudny and Bowie chipped in with a point each.

Kameka and McIllwraith split the goaltending duties to share the win.

The Flyers were hoping to wrap the series up with game three in Orangeville on Monday night, but Oakville was ready and brought their best game of the series.

Orangeville scored at the midway point of the first period, but the Rangers opened up and started creating more scoring chances and ended up scoring the tying goal in the last minute of the first.

The Flyers regained their one goal lead with a goal with just 34 seconds left in the middle period. Orangeville would get a much needed insurance goal with 2:04 left in the game and hang on to preserve a 3-1 and win the best of five series 3-0.

Chapman led the way with two points and Justin Stairs, Cooke and Boon collected a point each. McIllwraith play a very controlled game and made some outstanding saves to pick up the victory.

The Southwood Graphics Flyers will now move onto the OMHA Central finals against the winner of the Tottenham-New Tecumseth/Richmond Hill series. TNT currently leads the 8 point series 7-3.
