Earth Hour said a success
On March 28, between the hours of 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., Orangeville residents decreased their electricity consumption by 642 kW for Earth Hour 2009.
"This is the equivalent of 10,700 60-watt light bulbs being turned off, or approximately 50,000 13- watt CFL light bulbs being turned off," Orangeville Hydro said in a release. "That means that the equivalent of five CFL's were turned off by each customer."
Although the decrease was lower than last year's Earth Hour, Hydro said this could be due to warmer temperatures, which will naturally cause over-all electricity use to decrease.
"I also believe that many people also turned their lights out for a longer period than just the hour of Earth Hour, which would not be reflected in these numbers, but would help to explain the overall decrease in consumption from the two prior Saturday's," said Amy Long, Hydro's Conservation Program Coordinator.
