Silver lining for Flyers Peewee AA's
There was a silver lining to be found in the season wrap up for the Orangeville Peewee AA Flyers.
Playing at the Ontario Hockey Federation Peewee AA Championships in Barrie this past weekend, the Flyers converted a fourth place round robin finish into a berth in the Sunday afternoon's Championship final against the powerhouse Mississauga Braves who defeated Orangeville 4-1 to take the Peewee AA title.
Kicking off the tournament on Friday morning, the Flyers made quick work of their first opponent, the Copper Cliff Redmen.
Playing scoreless through the first, it was Mark Sellan teaming up with Michael Slipenkyj and Jeremy Glazier to put Orangeville on the scoreboard first at 7:46 of the second period.
Copper Cliff would come back to tie the score at 1-1 off the top of three but from then on, it was all Flyers as Tyler Haley and Glazier each scored singles in the third to lift Orangeville to a 3-1 victory.
Their second pairing of the day brought them up against a familiar foe, the Barrie Colts who had defeated Orangeville in the OMHA Finals just over a week before. Just as in the OMHA finals, Barrie continued to have the Flyers number and rolled to a convincing 8-1 decision where Nicholas Pirraglia would be the lone Orangeville goal scorer.
Saturday, the team faced off against another pair of tough teams.
First it was the London Jr Knights taking to the ice against the Flyers where Pirraglia and Slipenkyj each tagged singles but it was not enough to stop the Knights who recorded four of their own to double up over Orangeville 4-2.
Game four and the final game of the round robin put them against Mississauga for the first time.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the third Shane Hillis kept things close with his goal assisted by Pirraglia and Slipenkyj, a powerplay marker at 5:34.
Unfortunately for the Flyers, that would be all the offence they could muster while Mississauga added one more to seal the scoresheet and give them a 3-1 victory.
The one win over Copper Cliff however was enough to earn Orangeville a spot in Sunday morning's semifinal pairing against London where the outcome would be much different that the outing between these same two teams the day before.
Michael Sutton lead the way for Orangeville early in the first when he scored unassisted, what would prove to be the eventual game winner 7:46 into the first period.
Midway through the second it was Mitchell Mackenzie making it 2-0 while in the third Justin Wing combined with Jordan Ross and Sutton to nail down the 3-0 shutout win to advance them to the final against Mississauga.
Again however, the Mississauga machine continued to roll and the Brave soon had a commanding 3-0 lead early in the second before Braiden Davis would score Orangeville's lone marker, unassisted at 4:15 of the second. Mississauga would strike once more late in the second to make it 4-1 where the score would remain until the final buzzer to earn them the championship.
Even though Orangeville coach Scott Sutton and his boys would have much preferred the gold, he acknowledged that even silver at this level was a great accomplishment for this young team which combined along with being the OMHA Peewee AA finalists, capped of a great year for the team.
