2009 Hall inductees announced
The 2009 inductees to the Orangeville Sports Hall of Fame were announced earlier this week. As usual, a strong list of potential candidates was presented to the selection committee who narrowed it down to the four that were chosen.
This years nominees are Chris Sanderson, Lisa Patterson, Keith Beavers and Dan Stone.
No strange to local lacrosse fans, Sanderson comes with a impressive list of credentials.
Born in 1974, he spent his early years moving up through the Orangeville Northmen organization which culminated with back stopping the 1993 and 1995 Minto Cup champion Northmen Junior A teams.
Sanderson attended the University of Virginia from 1994-98, playing field lacrosse there with the Cavaliers.
No stranger to the world stage either, Sanderson also earned berth on the Canadian U-19 squad in 1992, and was a member of the World silver medalist teams in '98 and '02. He capped that off as a member of the goldmedal Canadian team at the World Lacrosse Championships in 2006.
Off the field, he has also left his mark taking up coaching positions behind many benches . A founding member of True North Lacrosse, he has shared his skills and knowledge at lacrosse camps and clinics across North America.
Lisa Patterson is also a name many who attended ODSS in the 80's will remember quite well. Starting in 1982 Patterson dominated the Cross Country Ski program at ODSS where she won numerous accolades ranging from the "Award of Achievement for Cross Country in '82 to Senior Championship titles at OFFSA in '84.
Her story did not end there.
Joining the Canadian Junior National Cross Country ski team, she continued to be recognized for her efforts, with a number of provincial and national achievement awards, as well as competing in World class events around the globe. After graduating university, she went on to complete teachers college and soon found herself teaching full time but her passion was still out on the trails where you can find her today coaching a number of teams, including the Lakehead University Cross Country team as well as the Big Thunder Ski Club.
Keith Beavers earns his place on the Hall of Fame wall by way of the swimming pool.
Starting at age six, Beavers began his career here in Orangeville but quickly moved on to bigger and better things.
In 2002, he established his credentials on the world stage in Yokohama, Japan where he won bronze for Canada at the Pan Pacific Championships.
From there he went on to compete in a number of world events including the Pan American Games in Rio de Janerio in 2007, as well as a spot on the Canadian Olympic Men's swim teams in Athens in 2004 and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing where he finished 7th in the 200- metre Individual Medley.
Wrapping up the list of nominees for 2008 is Dan Stone. A long time Orangeville resident, Stone has consistently been a volunteer in the local community. Notable among his volunteer commitments is his work with the Orangeville Wolves Hockey club. He was one of the original driving forces behind the creation of this team which gave special needs youth a place to play hockey.
Now entering into their tenth year, the team has grown to almost 40 players and finds themselves playing, not just across Ontario, but in the United States and London, England a couple of years back.
