Youth festival a fabulous success

      Last week was a fabulous week for those lucky enough to spend it at the Dufferin Youth Festival of the Arts (DYFA), at Orangeville Baptist Church. Now I will admit that, as a music teacher, I am slightly prejudiced in favour of the whole arts scene, but this was a wonderful, exciting and enlightening week.

     MEET ABBY: Abby the alligator was one of a number of scaly guests who came to Maples Independent Country School last Monday as part of the school's science week. Handler Cheryl Macfarlane of the Hamilton Travelling Reptile Show explained the habits of Abby and the other animals, and encouraged students to handle the critters.

East Gary representation at county a dead issue
      East Garafraxa Mayor Allen Taylor has abandoned all hope of having a second representative of his township at the Dufferin county council table. In a phone interview Wednesday, he said there wasn't "any chance" it would get the required "triple majority" approval.

First local bust under new drinking, driving law
      Orangeville police have issued their first licence suspension under Ontario's strict new drinking and driving law, designed to make motorists and the hospitality sector rethink their mindset. Police stopped a vehicle at about 3 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Wellington Street and Townline.

The town's Sustainability Action Team and Orangeville Hydro encourage residents to recognize the week and make the pledge to count themselves in by visiting the Town's website and saving energy. Mayor Adams is joined at the proclamation signing by Councillor Sylvia Bradley who chairs the Orangeville Sustainability Action Team, and Hiedi Murray, a member of the Team's Energy Sub-Committee.

100-mile potluck dinner coming
      Have you been watching the TV program where families are trying to cope with eating only food grown or produced within 100 miles of their homes? Does it look difficult? Would you be willing to try, just for one meal? Well, a group of Dufferin residents are planning to hold a 100 Mile Potluck Dinner on Wednesday, May 20, at St. Mark's Anglican church.

Caledon church to host speaker on creation vs. evolution
      Caledon Hills Fellowship Baptist Church will be hosting speaker Richard Fangrad for a multimedia presentation on the topic of creation/evolution on Sunday, May 24 at 10:30 am. The presentation will communicate scientific evidence for creation in layman's terms to challenge people to consider the accuracy of the Bible.
